GENERAL

The Institute was originally established as the Frontier Administrative Officers Training Centre (FAOTC), and it started functioning from 28 Oct 1963 at Holiday Camp, Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra. It was later shifted from Mahabaleshwar to Panchgani on 15th June 1966. In 1970 it was finally shifted to the present location at Gwaldam. In 1972 FAOTC, CTS Binatoli and HATC Sandev were merged and rechristened as Frontier Academy. F.A. Gwaldam was the ‘Mecca’ of SSB and it specialized in imparting training on Guerrilla Warfare.

The Frontier Academy was shifted to Srinagar, Garhwal and started functioning at the new location from 21st Oct 2004 as SSB Academy, while the Gwaldam campus was declared as CI&JW School and retained as its part.

TERRIAN AND CLIMATE  

Gwaldam is located at an altitude of 2000 meters above MSL, in the lap of the Himalayas. It offers a fascinating view of Himalayan peaks Trishul (7120 mt) and Nanda Ghungti (6309 mt).The temperature during summer varies between 10ºC to 24ºC, and during winter the temperature varies from -10ºC to 18ºC. Very often Gwaldam experiences snow fall during winters. It rains heavily during monsoon season.

CAMPUS

The CI&JW Campus is spread over three locations – 41.81   acres at Gwaldam, 7.45 acres at Binatoli and 10.12 acres (including approach road) at Kunila.  In addition 78.80 acres land has been declared as protected area and handed over to CI&JW School, SSB Gwaldam for the purpose of National Security Training by Forest Deptt.
