Centralised Training Centre SSB is situated at a distance of 18 KM from Tezpur town on the Tezpur – Balipara road access. Not very far from the location, are the tea gardens of Gogra tea estate of TATA MAGOR TEA COMPANY, which provides a rich green back drop to the surroundings. The Civil Airport Tezpur is located about 04 Kms away from SSB campus. Road transport from Guwahati to Tezpur/ Salonibari is good. Regular Bus services is available from Guwahati to Tezpur via Nowgaon and Mangaldoi. The road distance between Guwahati and Tezpur is about 195 KMs. A new train ‘KAMAKHYA –DEKARGAON (TEZPUR) Intercity Exp. has been started w.e.f 4th January’2014, which runs from Kamakhya Railway Station to Dekargaon (Tezpur) Railway Station which is hardly 04 Kms from CTC, SSB, Salonibari. Training Centre SSB was established on 1st December, 1965. The campus is spread over an area of 142 Acres of land. It is surrounded by lush green paddy fields on three sides. Two other establishments, i.e CSD & Workshop and Composite Hospital, Tezpur (at Salonibari) are also located within the campus of this Centralised Training Centre. It is stated that the campus initially came into existence during Second World War and was used by the British troops as a camping ground for the Allied Troops. Later various Assam Police Bns occupied the campus. However, after the Chinese aggression in 1962, the campus was used by various Indian Reserve Police Battalions which were deployed in Forwarded Post in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh. The sprawling campus of Centralized Training Centre, SSB, Salonibari bears its name, as the legend goes from \'SAL\' trees. SAL is considered as the best timber in Assam for building bridges and houses, and is one of the costliest wood. It is said that Training Centre Campus was once full of \'SAL\' trees and the present Centralized Training Centre got its name, SALONIBARI because of the SAL trees. SALONI in Assamese means abundance of SAL trees and BARI means garden. Thus Salonibari means garden of SAL trees.Centralised Training Centre, SSB, Salonibari is situated on the North Bank of the mighty Brahmaputra river, Tezpur is located 195 KM East of Guwahati, which is the gate way for the North Eastern region. Tezpur is known by its old name Sonitpur (which is now the name of the district). Legend goes that once Lord Krishna fought a bitter battle with Banasur to rescue his grandson Aniruddha. In that battle Lord Shiva took the side of Banasur. Therefore, the battle is also known as \" Hari – Har Yuddha \" or war between the Hari (Krishna) and Har (Shiva). In the battle there was so much bloodshed that the area came to be known as Sonitpur or town of blood. The township which came up later on, came to be known as Tezpur (Sonit in Assamese means Tez or blood).Apart from Mythological story, Tezpur is famous for many other things like historical sites and temples. The place came in lime light during the Chinese invasion. Entire township was vacated during the Chinese aggression and it became a deserted place. At present it is a thriving town with a population of urban 1,05,377 & Rural 1,50,561. The town is situated at a height of 70 Mtrs approx. from the mean sea level and the general climatic condition of the surrounding is good.The town has good educational facilities also. Presently there are three Degree Colleges including one Girls College, one B.Ed. College, one Law College and one Central University besides many Secondary Schools which include three Kendriya Vidyalayas. The first convocation of the Central University was graced by President K.R. Narayanan in 1999. The President of India, Bharat Ratna A.P.J. Abdul Kalam attended the convocation held in 2001.
