Arun Chaudhary, IPS, Director General, SSB (Retd)

Shri Arun Chaudhary was born on 1st May 1954 and is a 1977 batch Bihar Cadre Officer. He  joined the Police Administration in the State of Bihar in January 1978 and went on to serve in the state up to August 1994.

 During this period, he engaged in active police work as Superintendent of Police in Vaishali, Madhubani and Rohtash Districts. As Superintendent of Police in the Cabinet Vigilance Department of the State, was in-charge of important cases pertaining to All India Service Officers of the State, senior officers and engineers of Irrigation and PWD departments.  During this tenure, conducted vigilance enquires into the working of the Irrigation department which ended in action against Engineers and Chief Engineer and some Senior Officers for financial irregularities pertaining to World Bank Schemes meant for repair of important canals in North Bihar. He then took over as Senior Superintendent of Police at Patna and worked in the State Intelligence Department. He was in-charge of VIP security and Security of vital installations in the State and also was in-charge of Anti-Naxal Operations and Anti-Dacoity Operations under the State CID.

 

In September 1994, he moved out on central deputation to the Intelligence Bureau under MHA. Here he was posted as Deputy Director, J&K at Jammu from 1996 to 1998. During this tenure, he mostly looked after Kashmir Operations. Later, he became Joint Director and Additional Director in- charge of J&K State at Srinagar from June 2007 to February 2009 from 1994 to February 2009. He was responsible for intelligence generation and operations in area of responsibility and sharing of intelligence with other security forces for operations.  He advised the head of the Organization (IB) on formulation of security doctrine and preparing operational data base of groups and individuals who are threats to national security. During his tenure in IB, he received the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1996 and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2002. He was also awarded the Vijay Star for his contribution during the Kargil Operations.

 

In February 2009, he took over as Special Director, Department of Immigration, Intelligence Bureau under MHA at New Delhi. Here had a plethora of responsibilities as the head of Immigration and Border control for all the International Airports, land ports and sea ports in India. He regulated and implemented immigration laws to prevent illegal immigration, human trafficking, drug trafficking and travel document frauds including, forgery of documents. He proved his acumen in extensively engaging in policy making of visa regime and issuing passport in close cooperation with the Ministries of Home and External Affairs. He participated in International conferences on Border Management and Immigration Laws and represented the country, in the Bali initiative of Government of Australia to check illegal immigration from conflict Zones like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and some other countries. He remained committed extensively until May 2011.

 

For a period of 17 months from June 2011 to November 2012, he served as Special Director General (Airport Security) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and took on responsibilities relating to administration, deployment and operational security control of 56 Airports in India which included the International airports of all the major metropolitan cities.  He supervised their Security Management the vital installations, airports, operations including, access control, proper security vetting of persons entering the airport and security clearance of passengers and cargo. He ensured proper liaison with other airport organisations including, immigration, customs, airport operators and airlines staff. He ensured implementation of international directives by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on airport and airlines safety.

 

Shri Arun Chaudhary took over as Director General of Police, Sashastra Seema Bal under the MHA on 10th December 2012 and remained there until he superannuated on 30th April 2014. In a focused manner he reoriented and realigned the Force against arms smugglers, drug and human traffickers, fake currency racketeers, forest products smugglers, infiltration of terrorist hardware and prohibited items. SSB began to engage the sister organisations in sync and vigorously. Further, he even engaged our counterparts from Nepal and Bhutan in a mutually dependent manner and a result oriented manner. Apart from this, he closely supervised the operational activities in hard areas like J & K and Left Wing Extremists areas and on internal security duties. MHA and Ministry of External Affairs too supported his initiatives to the hilt.
